The summer seems like an eternity ago, and all the things the program has been through seems like it is done and gone because we were able to bring the men back for 2009-10, but now it’s back to reality. We now have our goals set for saving the men’s program long term, and there is good news and bad news about that. The original numbers that were thrown around in June and July were certainly high and were questioned and scrutinized by me and by the baseball coach. The good news is we are now at a 5 year number of $65,000 (which is much better than the original number of $200,000) to save the tennis program. The bad news is that it’s still $65,000 we have to raise, and it comes at a poor time in the economy, and right after we asked for help to save the program for the current year.Things we have already done this fall are giving us a start.Helping with stadium cleanup after football games brought in more than $3000, and selling tickets at other UW-L sporting events will bring in another $1000 for the team.We are going to offer tennis court naming rights to Alumni (and to all of you if you are interested, it’s $5000 total or $1000 a year for 5 years, see information provided below) that will hopefully bring in some money, and we will be holding our Golf/Tennis weekend next summer on August 7-8 to continue our efforts (SAVE THE DATE!).I will be meeting with a committee we formed locally to get some community support and involvement, and there are a number of other things on the horizon we are thinking of that will hopefully bring us to the point of keeping the men’s team around forever. This year is the hardest because of the 5 year amount we are required to raise.Once we hit that mark, yearly fundraising will be back to where it was before this fiasco, and the burden will be considerably less on our players than it is on the current team. But, again I say, back to reality. This year, our team needs to put in the time and effort and raise this money. It’s not something I wanted to do, and not something I want our players to have to do, but we talked the talk in saying that we would do this, so now it’s time to get down to business and do it.
When our players leave here and go on to bigger and better things, I want them to look back on their college tennis experience as one which enriched their lives and made their college years memorable.I know that if the men’s team is eliminated, they won’t have the opportunity to have that great experience that many of you had, and even the women’s program will feel like it lost something, and that overall experience will suffer for everyone. So, with that in mind, I am hopeful that you will continue to be involved in our efforts. Many of you stepped up in a huge way in our effort to save the program for 2009-10, and that continued support will be essential for our survival. We certainly have some added challenges this year, but if we do a good job, get the support we need, and have a little luck along the way, we can get back to focusing on winning tennis matches instead of trying to make sure we are able to play them.Have a wonderful holiday season, and we will continue to have the website available for updates and events. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
We need your help in accomplishing our goals. Please see all of information below regarding some of the things we are trying to do to raise money, and be as generous as you can be.
Sincerely,
Bill Hehli, UW-L Tennis Coach
KWIK TRIP REWARDS:Most of you have heard about the Kwik Trip rewards program, and some of you have been sent brochures on how to join. It’s really an easy way for you to help us, and all we ask of you is that you buy your gas at Kwik Trip and use the card. One of the local high schools in La Crosse makes thousands of dollars on this annually. If we all join, and do a good job using the program, we are able to put far less burden on our players to go out and raise money in the future. If you did join and the rewards are not going to the tennis program, please call Kwik Trip and get it changed! We need your help on this.See the website for more information on how to join this program.
PLEDGE SHEETS:This one isn’t my favorite thing to do, but we have to ask for donations again.I am hopeful that our current players and their families will certainly step up, and I will be asking them to go out and ask others for help as well.We are asking for only pledges at this point, so that we will only be collecting money from donors if we have enough pledged by May 1, 2010.We are hoping for an annual pledge of $100 over five years, for a total of $500, but will take any amount that people are willing to give. The pledge form is enclosed. Please make copies and give it to anyone who might be able to help.
REFFLE/AUCTION ITEMS:We need “stuff” as well as money.I think we put on a great auction and banquet last year, and the raffle we did mid-year was also successful. We had wonderful items for prizes at our golf outing.Because we are asking for money again, and continuing to do those fundraising events, we need to continue to have great items to make those events successful.I was so proud of our selection and variety of items that we had this past year, and I want to surpass it for the next round of raffles, auctions, and prizes.Anything you can get your hands on, it doesn’t even have to be sports related, is a big help to us.
COURT SPONSORSHIPS:We will be selling naming rights to the individual courts and the banks of courts. We are looking for individuals, families, graduating classes, or businesses who would like to be recognized at the tennis facility. For $5000 ($1000 per year), any one of the courts could be named “YOUR NAME” court. There will be a sign on each court named in your honor and a plaque as well with some more information about the donor. We would also like to get a minimum of 4 businesses to give $10,000 ($2000 per year) to sponsor a bank of four courts. They would be recognized with a large sign or banner on the inside bank of the courts they sponsor, and an outside banner along La Crosse Street, so all the passing traffic can see their sign. Kind of like a billboard. There are certainly other things we would love to do, and depending on the response we get, will be looking to make improvements to the facility (bleachers, bathrooms, and maybe a bubble) as well as helping to save the men’s program. If you are interested or know of anyone who might be, please pass the information along.
GET THE WORD OUT:As expected, the initial push to save the program has died down, and we don’t want anyone to forget about us.While we are grateful to have a program for 2010, we don’t want to let it die there. We need your help in this. You have voices outside of La Crosse that can make a difference.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOU DO AND FOR YOUR HELP WITH OUR EFFORTS.GO EAGLES!
